Planejammer: Ad Astra Per Arcana
To generate your character’s statistics, use my standard method:
- roll 4d6,reroll ones and take the highest three dice
- do this six times; arrange the scores to suit.
- For hit points, a character gets maximum hit points for his first character level, and then rolls normally for all other (and future) character levels.
- Your PC will begin with three character levels to spend on class (one or more) and race (yes, some races cost a character level). This translates to 3000 experience points. This also means that you will have 2700 gold pieces to spend on starting equipment (more on that later).
Class choices are pretty extensive. You are free to choose from any of the core Pathfinder classes, or any classes that appear in most official WOTC publications, Malhavoc publications, or Dreamscarred Press publications. Calsses from WOTC or 3.5 compatible sources must be vetted by the DM and updated to full compatibility. The DM is always available for consultation.
Character race also gives you many options. In addition to the races presented in the core materials, there are a number of races specific to the Planescape and Spelljammer settings which appear in our house rules. The Races series from WOTC is considered cannon for our games as well. In addition to race, you also have to choose whether your character is from the Material Plane (a Prime) or native to the Outer/Inner Planes (a Planar).
Equipping the Character
As I mentioned earlier, you will be starting with a 3rd level character. Since the PC has been around for a bit, he’s got some stuff – 2700 gold worth of stuff to be exact. This figure covers not only mundane gear such as clothing and backpacks, but also any exceptional (masterwork tools / planar metal weapons) or magical (healing potions) items that the character has.
I will also be handing out character- specific magic items. These are items of relatively minor power that fit in with your character’s concept.
Character backgrounds must be worked out with the DM in advance.
Determine your character’s three levels of Personal Dreams: Hopes,Aspirations,and Goals. These will have tangible game effects, be ye warned!
Answer these three questions for your characters:
“What did your character always want as a child?” Was it a particular pet? A certain toy? Or perhaps a desire to see a famous person or place? To never be hungry or to know a lost parent? Perhaps to travel? Or was it to return to a certain place? Consider your character’s origin and childhood as you answer this question and choose a personal Dream.
“What did your character desire in adolescence?” Did the character seek the love of a particular person? Acceptance in a group of people? Perhaps she desired money to pay for essentials, the approval of an authority figure, or merely power? Was there a girl? A guy?Consider your character’s social status as it may influence this personal Dream.
“What does your character strive for as an adult?”Maybe the character wants immense wealth or a marriage to a particular person? Perhaps just to bed a specific person? Perhaps a desire to join a prestigious group or organization? Is
he after land and titles? Or just a simple sort of life? Consider your character’s religious beliefs, if any, as you choose this personal Dream.
Answer these questions with several details, including names, physical descriptions, and personalities. Ceremonies should have dates. Organizations and groups should be connected to famous people, deeds or locations. The DM is available to consult and help with these details.
When these questions have been answered, rank these Dreams in order of importance: the most important will be their Hope, the second will be their Aspiration, and the last will be their Goal.
